Effective date: October 1, 2026

1. Acceptance of These Terms

These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern access to and use of the BookWork Inc. (“BookWork”) website at www.bookwork.org, the BookWork app at app.bookwork.org, accounts, reading activities, and related services (together, the “website and services”).

By creating an account, a teen participant agrees to these Terms. Every teen account also requires a parent or legal guardian to agree to these Terms, on the teen’s behalf and on behalf of any younger child who can be heard in the teen’s recordings, by completing BookWork’s Parent/Guardian Consent Form. If you do not agree, please do not use the website and services.

2. About BookWork

BookWork is an educational nonprofit that helps young children build a love of reading by encouraging teens to read aloud to their younger siblings.

3. Eligibility

BookWork’s reading program is for teens who are 14 to 18 years old when they sign up and who live in the United States. A teen’s account is activated only after (1) their parent or legal guardian completes the Consent Form and (2) BookWork approves the account.

BookWork is currently approving accounts in California and Massachusetts. Teens in other states may sign up and will be placed on a waitlist. BookWork may decline or waitlist any application.

4. Younger Children in Recordings

Children under 13 do not have BookWork accounts. A teen’s recordings may include the voice of a younger child they read to. By completing the Consent Form, the parent or guardian confirms that they are that younger child’s parent or legal guardian (or are otherwise authorized to consent for them) and consents to the child’s voice being included in recordings submitted to BookWork.

Please don’t say a younger child’s full name or other identifying details in a recording.

5. Educational Use

The website and services may be used only for lawful, educational, and program-related purposes. Users may submit recordings of reading sessions they choose, view their activity and thank-you coins, and take part in related literacy activities as permitted by BookWork.

BookWork does not assign books or set a schedule. Participation is voluntary, and teens choose what, when, and how often to read. Teens may, if they wish, end a recording by sharing what they or their younger sibling enjoyed about the story. This is never required.

6. Parent/Guardian Responsibility

A parent or guardian completing the Consent Form confirms that they are authorized to act for the teen and for any younger child in the teen’s recordings. Parents and guardians are responsible for reviewing these Terms and the Privacy Policy and for supervising their teen’s use of the website and services as appropriate.

A parent or guardian may withdraw consent at any time by emailing contact@bookwork.org. The teen’s account will then be closed.

7. Accounts

Users must provide accurate information when creating accounts and must keep login credentials confidential. BookWork may suspend or close accounts that are inaccurate, unauthorized, insecure, or used in violation of these Terms.

Each participant may have only one account unless BookWork gives prior written permission for a different arrangement. Creating, controlling, or using multiple accounts for the same person, or using another person’s account, is not allowed. BookWork may suspend, merge, or close duplicate or related accounts, remove associated submissions, coins, or gifts, and take any other action reasonably necessary to protect the integrity of the program.

8. Recordings and Your Content

Teen participants may upload voice recordings only as part of program participation. Teens keep ownership of their recordings. By submitting a recording, the teen and their parent or guardian permit BookWork to store, process, and review that recording to confirm that the reading session took place, prevent duplicate or resubmitted recordings, run the thank-you coin program, provide support, and keep program records.

BookWork may also use de-identified participation data, such as how often and for how long teens read, for research on reading and literacy, as described in the Privacy Policy. The audio of recordings is not used for research.

Unless separate written consent is obtained from the parent or guardian, recordings will not be used for public marketing, fundraising, research, or publication outside the program.

9. Verification of Reading

BookWork may use staff review, timestamps, account activity, upload logs, and similar technical or administrative records to determine whether a reading session appears to have been completed. BookWork may also use tools that help organize or flag submissions for review, but decisions are made by people.

Review checks only that a recording is genuine, meets the minimum length, and hasn’t been submitted before. BookWork does not grade the quality of a reading.

10. Thank-You Coins and Gifts

To thank teens for reading with their younger siblings, BookWork may give coins for approved reading sessions and reading milestones. Coins can be exchanged for gift cards or other thank-you gifts, subject to the minimums and yearly limits shown in the app.

  • Participation is voluntary. Teens take part as volunteers, not as employees or contractors.
  • Coins and gifts are small tokens of appreciation. They are not wages, payment, or compensation for services.
  • Coins have no cash value and cannot be sold, transferred, or exchanged for cash.
  • Each teen can receive only a limited total value of gifts per calendar year, as set by BookWork.
  • BookWork may change, pause, or end the coin and gift program at any time.
  • BookWork may cancel coins or gifts connected to fraud, duplicate accounts, or a violation of these Terms.
  • Gift cards issued by another company (for example, Amazon) are also subject to that company’s terms.

11. Acceptable Conduct

Users may not:

  • Upload unlawful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, obscene, or unrelated content.
  • Submit a recording they did not make, or alter, reuse, or resubmit a recording.
  • Create or use accounts to obtain coins or gifts improperly.
  • Include another person’s private information in a recording or post without permission.
  • Try to interfere with the security or normal operation of the website and services.
  • Access another user’s account without permission.
  • Use the website and services for commercial, political, or unrelated promotional activity (sharing BookWork’s own share or referral links is allowed).
  • Misrepresent identity, age, parent/guardian authority, or whether a reading was completed.

BookWork may remove content or restrict access if it reasonably believes these Terms have been violated or that action is needed to protect users or the website and services.

12. Sharing on Social Media

Teens may use BookWork’s share feature to post their reading milestones. Share pages show only the teen’s first name and are hidden from search engines. When sharing, never post a younger child’s name, photo, or voice, and follow the rules of the platform you post on. BookWork is not responsible for content you post on other platforms.

13. Privacy

Use of the website and services is also governed by the Privacy Policy. Where these Terms and the Privacy Policy address the same subject, they should be read together.

14. Intellectual Property

The website and services, including their software, design, text, graphics, logos, and program materials, belong to BookWork or its licensors, except for user-submitted content. No user may copy, sell, distribute, or create derivative works from these materials beyond ordinary personal or educational use without written permission.

15. Third-Party Services and Links

The website and services rely on third-party tools (for example, cloud hosting, email delivery, spam protection, and gift card providers) and may link to outside services. BookWork is not responsible for the privacy or content practices of third-party sites, except to the extent it directly controls its own service providers.

16. Disclaimer

The website and program are provided to support literacy activities. While BookWork aims to keep the website and services available and accurate, it cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation or that every submission will be received, stored, or reviewed without delay.

17. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, BookWork will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from use of the website and services. Nothing in these Terms limits rights or protections that cannot be waived under applicable law.

18. Ending Access

BookWork may suspend, restrict, or end access if these Terms are violated, if a user creates safety or privacy risks, or if the program or website is changed or discontinued. A teen or their parent or guardian may also ask for the teen’s account to be closed by emailing contact@bookwork.org, subject to the retention periods described in the Privacy Policy.

19. Changes to These Terms

BookWork may update these Terms from time to time by posting a revised version on the website with a new effective date. If a change is material, BookWork will also email account holders and their parents or guardians before it takes effect. Continued use after changes take effect means the updated Terms are accepted, to the extent permitted by law.

20. Governing Law and Forum

These Terms and any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the website and services will be governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, any action or proceeding arising out of or relating to these Terms or the website and services must be brought only in the state or federal courts located in Delaware. Each user, parent, or guardian agreeing to these Terms consents to the personal jurisdiction and venue of those courts and waives any objection that those courts are an inconvenient forum.
